BR 78 refers to a German steam locomotive that was commonly used for passenger and freight services. It was produced by the German National Railway Company, known as Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG), between 1925 and 1938. The BR 78 was a 4-6-4 tank locomotive that had a top speed of 90 km/h (56 mph) and a hauling capacity of 1,200 tons. It was widely used in Germany during World War II for its ability to operate on various types of tracks and its high level of reliability. After the war, many BR 78 locomotives were used by the East Germany railway company, the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR), until they were gradually replaced by diesel locomotives in the 1960s. Today, several BR 78 locomotives can still be found in various railway museums and private collections around the world.
